Rain Out and Air Quality Information

Field Closures Due to Weather

The City of Fort Saskatchewan has launched an interactive map to help users track the status of sports fields and parks.
With this map, Sports Field Updates will no longer be sent via email; users are asked to refer to the map for the latest field status. Updates will be posted to the map by 3:00 PM on weekdays.

You can find information on Sports Field Status updates, including the link to the interactive map, at fortsask.ca/SportsFields.

City of Fort Saskatchewan Field Closure Guidelines
The City of Fort Saskatchewan determines when soccer fields are open or closed. During heavy or prolonged rain, play is not allowed on the fields.

Please refrain from calling the offices of Fort Saskatchewan Soccer or Fort Saskatchewan Minor Sports, as they can only direct you to the City's website for updates.

If conditions are too wet or unsafe, and the City has closed the fields, please contact your coach. You can also check our Facebook and Twitter feeds on the homepage for cancellation notices.

If the fields are closed, teams should not show up for games or practices.

After 3:00 PM or on weekends, if weather conditions worsen, it’s the responsibility of the sports leagues (coaches, referees, etc.) to make a decision about field usage based on player safety and field conditions.

For games in Edmonton or surrounding areas, please refer to the local town/city websites for field closure updates.

When Fort Saskatchewan sports fields are closed, teams may practice on the green space surrounding the fields, but not on the actual sports fields.

Rain Out Games

#1 - Fields are open, but the referee has determined that the field conditions may damage the field or pose a risk to player safety. Teams must show up unless notified otherwise about game or practice cancellation.

#2 - Fields are open, but the referee has called for a postponement or cancellation based on the lightning rule. Teams must show up unless notified otherwise about game or practice cancellation.

#3 - Fields are open, but the coach or program director has determined that practice is postponed or canceled due to weather or field conditions. Teams should not show up. Please check your email, team notification app (e.g., TeamSnap), or the Facebook and Twitter feeds on the homepage for updates.

In cases where heavy rain or lightning occurs after 3:00 PM, only the referee can cancel the game. Both teams must be present at the game and await the referee's decision. If the fields are unsafe due to rain, the referee may decide to cancel the game.

Thunder or Lightning

If you see lightning or hear thunder, wrap up your game or practice immediately!

Lightning Policy

In accordance with safety protocols, games or practices must be suspended at the first sign of lightning or thunder. Please ensure that all participants leave the field immediately and seek shelter.
